A few months ago, around February or March, the KNYEW team was filmed by Voja Radosavljevic and Emily Gimmel for a video piece they were going to feature on the site www.702.tv. Some time had passed and me and the fellas totally forgot about whole taping until Voja hit me up earlier this week letting me know that it was finally done and going to air on Channel 14 (Vegas TV) tonight night, June 25th at 10:30pm. The video is also featured on their site www.702.tv as well as www.LasVegasWeekly.com (the online site for Las Vegas Weekly Magazine). My favorite part has to be the footage of Neva aka Black Panda folding t-shirts and Kenn’s jolly ass stocking new eras on the shelves…hahahaha, check it out.
The Hundreds were also cool enough to showcase our video piece on their site today at www.TheHundreds.com. Big up to David & Bobby at The Hundreds, goodlooking fellas.
I know it’s been a minute since I posted a new mix for “Mixtape Mondays” but in light of Michael Jackson’s passing, I had to lace you guys with these great tributes. This man had an extensive catalog of music beyond his “Off The Wall” & “Thriller” albums and these amazing mixtapes by DJ Jaycee of The Aphilliates, DJ Ayres of The Rub, DJ MOS from NYC, DJ J-Rocc of the Beat Junkies & the legendary DJ Premier showcase alot of Michael Jackson’s earlier work before his contract with Epic (when The Jackson 5 became The Jacksons). Check’em out and enjoy…Crooked signing out.
Its hard to believe and I don’t think any of us wanted to believe it. I was hoping TMZ and all these other blog sites were full of shit and this crazy rumor of Michael Jackson passing was a hoax. Unfortunately, the truth is that the King of Pop is dead. I can’t help but think about MJ’s last days and how we, his fans, never properly celebrated his career. In the end, he was the pinnacle of music entertainment. He conquered all realms of music whether it be through studio recordings, live performances or music videos. We’ll miss you MJ…much love and respect from all of us at KNYEW.
One of Neva’s favorite Michael Jackson moments was his performance at The Motown 25th Anniversary when he performed “Billie Jean” after his set with The Jacksons.
Kenny’s favorite Michael Jackson moment was his performance at Superbowl XXVII in 1993.
Just got off the horn with my man Jordan at Free Gold Watch in San Fran and the “KNYEW x SKAM” collabo tees were just finished, packed, sealed and shipped out today. He was kind enough to send me some behind the scenes photos of production from their studio. Many thanks to Jordan and the rest of the Free Gold Watch crew from doing an amazing job printing up our “KNYEW x SKAM’ tees. Remember, they’re dropping this Tuesday, June 30th…
On Monday, June 29th at 3400 (the VIP Room) inside JET Nightclub in the Mirage, KNYEW & SKAM Artists presents “Backspin”, a monthly Monday night party celebrating oldschool hip-hop, reggae, r&b and classics. For our grand opening night, we decided to bring out some close members of the KNYEW fam, DJ Five (from Tao, Lavo, Body English) & DJ OB-One (from Playboy Club, Moon, Beauty Bar) along with me (DJ Crooked from Lavo, Tao, Wet Republic, Cherry) and DJ Neva (Jet, Bank, Bare). You’ve got some of the most premiere dj’s in Las Vegas at one venue spinning nothing but good music all night. I’m talking music like “360 (What goes around)” by Grand Puba, “Chez Chez La Ghost” by Ghostface Killah, “Ting A Ling” by Shabba Ranks, “Hey Mr.DJ” by Zhane and “Saturday Love” by Cherrelle. Hit us up at email@example.com for guestlist information or just mention “KNYEW” at the front door. This will be an amazing night for KNYEW and all our friends, family & supporters…let’s get together & get fuuuucked uuuppp!!!!
For the last 6 weeks, I’ve been working on this “KNYEW x SKAM” collabo t-shirt with our designer Sean. It’s been a non-stop process of re-works and last minute changes, and to our much needed relief, the t-shirt is finally done. SKAM is an artist management group that represents a bunch of premiere DJ’s in the US. I (more of a mere dj than premiere) just recently signed to SKAM a couple of months ago and during a brief conversation with the owner, Sujit, he mentioned to me about designing a few SKAM t-shirts through KNYEW. I took this light inquiry and decided to make it a full blown, over the top, balls to the wall project that he and I probably regret. Anyhow, this collabo tee is definitely something me and the KNYEW boys are proud of. Our designer, Sean, went above and beyond for us and banged out one of the best t-shirts we’ve ever produced. As usual, our San Francisco connect, FREE GOLD WATCH, will be printing up the shirts and it’ll be on American Apparel tees. Many thanks to Jon, Errol & Bo Basic at the SKAM offices for assisting us with everything. The “KNYEW x SKAM” collabo tee will be dropping Tuesday, June 30th… uno!!!
Another very important reference was our boys from FREE GOLD WATCH. Their “Knicks” tee was definitely the best executed design we’ve ever seen for a shirt that followed the same “Midnight Marauders” theme.
My first idea was to make the shirt a pocket tee with A Tribe Called Quest’s “Lowend Theory” theme on the front and their “Midnight Marauders” theme on the back. We ended up chucking this idea and decided to stick to our original plan for a front only design.
Here’s the first draft that Sean made. This rough draft helped us decide how many heads we would place on each row and where to organize everyone.
Here’s a scanned image of one of Sean’s many rough copies that we made changes to. It shows how we finally came up with the idea to seperate all the dj’s by the city they resided in. We also finalized the idea of having every icon, next to each head, represent the person’s character and/or city. The red chicken scratch is from me
