With less than a week until our KNYEW JACK CITY Collection’s release on Friday, I wanted to post some behind-the-scene production pics from the screen printer’s work shop. Me & Jazzy (aka Mama Knyewtron) made a stop a couple of weeks ago to check on the print work & make sure everything was on schedule for the June 1st release date.

If you didn’t already know, screen printing is a process allowing different color inks or paints to be transferred onto fabrics through open sections burned into mesh screens. Here you can see a mechanical squeegee, soaked in black paint, gliding across the open sections of the mesh screen, filling in the black areas for each t-shirt’s design.

Even though there’s a wide range of colors available, most screen printing machines are limited to a certain amount of colors (usually 6-8). Only one color can be applied for each screen so it’s important that you select your colors wisely. The next time you see a t-shirt, count the number of colors in the t-shirt’s design. Each color represents a screen & the more screens you use, the more expensive & complex the job.

Here you can see the different screens that this t-shirt had to go through. The 1st screen at the top left was the white coating. The 2nd screen at the top right was the skin tone. The 3rd screen at the bottom left was the blue coloring & the final screen at the bottom right was for the red bow, panties & shoes.

The order for each screen color is also very important. Certain colors bleed more than others so in most cases, delicate colors like red & yellow are usually printed last on the list.

Once the last screens are done, the t-shirt is removed from the machine & tossed into the dryer.

With temperatures up to 300 degrees, the dryer ensures each print is locked in & smear-proof for every t-shirt.

Stacked, packed & ready to go…

From concept, production & finally, to marketing where me & the KNYEW Crew tweet, instagram & facebook the shit out of the finished products so all you Knyewtrons can get a first hand look. As you can see, I’m checking the number of “likes” we received on instagram (don’t act like you don’t do it too).

From the sketch pad to the screen printers, it takes a lot of people to make these collections possible. It’s a long process but in the end, it’s all fuckin’ worth it. KNYEW JACK CITY Collection is dropping this Friday, June 1st…Crooked signing out!

Once or twice a week I sit down with a few local designers & exchange ideas & conceptualize drawings. I sat down with my boy Brian De Leon, a local artist here in Las Vegas, to go over the final designs for our KNYEW JACK CITY Collection dropping next Friday, June 1st.

Brian De Leon, originally from San Diego, has been on his grind in Vegas, showcasing his work at local art shows & drawing commissioned portraits for everyone from Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Lil Jon, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Yela Wolf, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki & even Skrillex. If you haven’t seen his artwork, please log onto his blogspot & check’em out.

Almost all our designs at KNYEW start from mindless scribbles & random sketches. During our meetings, concepts & ideas flow from the mouths & quickly get translated on paper, creating some of the first stages of what may be a possible design. Here’s some of Brian De Leon‘s drawings for our KNYEW stickers.

This KNYEW JACK CITY Collection initially started with a couple unfinished sketches I drew a few months ago. Dividing my time between DJ gigs in/out of town while overseeing the operations at KNYEW gave me limited opportunities to finish these drawings alone. After sitting in limbo for almost 2 months, I finally called my boy Brian De Leon to help me wrap up this project.

Here’s one of the first drafts I drew for the KNYEW JACK CITY Collection. The Crooked version…

Here’s Brian‘s rendition of the same sketch, totally redrawn & reworked. This ended up being the final draft we finalized for production. The De Leon version…

Once again, we’ve got my incomplete rough sketch on the right with Brian’s finished draft on the left. Loved how Brian did her hands…(not mad at the work I did on her nips either).

Once the final drafts are finalized, they’re traced & vectored into Adobe Illustrator. It’s during this process when the actual design for the t-shirt starts to come together. Btw, there’s usually no paws allowed on the table during meetings.

We designate what colors to incorporate into each design & test them over different t-shirt/tank top templates. We adjust the sizing & placement for each design, making sure the composition is just right.

The sizing & placement is never really determined until the design is actually worn & modeled in person. We don’t want the image size to appear too small & unnoticeable nor too large & overwhelming. Because the fit is different on men & women tank tops, we also have to size accordingly for both prints. Our girl Jaz (aka Mama Knyewtron) made sure we got it just right for the ladies.

From concept to production, this is just a small glimpse of the process we undergo at KNYEW. Many thanks to the homie Brian De Leon for coming on board with the KNYEW Crew & providing his amazing talents for this KNYEW JACK CITY Collection.

Don’t forget Knyewtrons! KNYEW JACK CITY Collection is dropping next Friday, June 1st. T-shirts & tank tops for both men & women will be available for purchase in-store & online at 11am West Coast Time. More pics & previews coming soon…Crooked signing out!
